Subject: the original opening score mix
I think that the mono original is more expansive in conjunction with the images. I believe that the sense of space can be portrayed by choosing from a spaces unique qualities, its relationship to another, or a combined interpretation. The hotel, especially, is riddled with inconsistent or extreme types of spaces, resulting in a mix of an underplayed space, such as simple portrayals of their personal rooms, the car, the airport terminal, the garage, the ham radio room, and even the breakroom..the everyday permeates, and is contrasted with impressionable surreal imagery with an exaggerated sense of the portrayal of space, which seems more enhanced through mystery, and an anticipatory, melodic, horror film kinaesthetic. Getting back to my opinion on the opening credits, the blanketed score creates a third wall viewpoint of the surroundings, enhanced by the absence of the original ambience or natural sounds. A stereophonic adaptation only further enhances the third wall; portrayal of naturalistic space is minimal and difficult with quite vast spaces..its difficult to achieve a naked space without keeping embellishments to a minimum; they are opposing qualities. A very unique situation is necessary to achieve a harmonic balance of an intense and open naked space and embellishment. This is a lost artform, which might be a clue in to a widespread misunderstanding of this elusive quality, especially since we are in a "catch up" stage that also precipitates experimentation and discovery. To make sense of an elusive and possibly extinct sensibility by archival means of the puzzle pieces of degrading and en flux materials from prior generations of an artform, is already difficult and prone to inaccuracy and disparate views. The outstanding sensibility is the result of the subtle undertow of a more elusive spatial interpretation and spikes; the dramatic effect is echoic, while real space naturally, is rolled over as a mere vessel to furnish this cinematic interplay. Instrumentation in real space, using real instruments, or atleast situated in a non discriminate space, is the means to balance situation, setting, activity, and dialogue. Ironically, celphones would be included in interpreting real space in contemporary society. The most outstanding use of space interplay is in the smaller spaces, just on basic recollection, as an example; when the camera is at an overhead shot of the hallway where the ball rolls into dannys play space..as an off the cuff remark on the scene to show how the "chemistry" in the film appears to work itself out on screen for audience consumption, situationally enhanced dramatic space and the immediate naked space are in a striking harmony.
